An exploration of the collective behavior of animals in nature and the consequences of disrupting their synchronous dynamic.
Dora Tomulic is an American artist of Croatian origin with an international background. She received her master’s degree in Studio Art at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb. She did her postgraduate studies at the Visual Arts Academy at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. After studying in Germany, she settled in Sri Lanka for a decade. Dora moved to the United States in 2005. She now lives and works in the suburbs of New York City. Dora's work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
The turmoil of war in Croatia and living across several continents had a profound impact on Dora’s work. Chaos and patterns of motion are therefore fundamental to her work. She considers chaos to be a prerequisite for order rather than its antithesis. Chaotic motion gives rise to ordered structures that provide an infinite source of spatial relations. Dora places ambiguous figures within abstract patterns to create a mystical, kaleidoscopic space. Each of her paintings is a complex visual metaphor, full of iconography derived from personal and collective symbolism.
