The History Behind the Piece:
This piece is one of the 'Villeroy & Boch' plates that was designed and signed by Keith Haring (1958-1990) for his friend Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis’ 29th birthday party in 1989. The plates were gifts to guests who attended the birthday party at the Regensburg Palace. Other pieces of the collection include a party invitation, a vinyl (with a performance by Princess Gloria), and cover art, all of which were designed by Haring. This piece can also be seen in MoMA’s collection at (https://www.moma.org/collection/works/183998).
Item Description:
Each plate is made of white earthenware with red and black glaze. The outer portion of the plate is detailed with his signature, stylized moving figures and boldly outlined in black. It is signed "K. Haring" on the bottom right. In the middle rim of the piece, it is inscribed "Princess Gloria, 15 April 1989," and in the center, it is again signed "K. Haring" and "For Stewart" with another image of his signature, stylized figure, this time in a crawling position. The plate measures 10 3/4 inches in diameter and contains the markings of its German manufacturer, 'Villeroy & Boch' on the back of the piece. This plate is encased in an open, black wood frame and situated on a luxurious, velvet backing. This is a rare and special plate that has been personalized by Haring, as only a select number of them were created.
