The Breitling Brand
Breitling was founded in Saint-Imier, Bernese Jura by Léon Breitling in 1884. Léon Breitling chose to dedicate himself to an exclusive field of chronographs and timers. These diligent instruments were intended for sports, science and business. The innovation of the Breitling brand skyrocketed at the same time the automobile, competitive sports, and the aviation pioneers did. These watches are usually marketed towards either diving (SuperOcean) or aviation (Navitimer). Aviation models, such as the Navitimer, offer aviation functions largely as complications, since their function in aviation has largely been replaced by modern electronic instruments. In 1915, Breitling designated the development of the wrist chronograph by inventing the first independent chronograph pushpiece. Later, in 1923, the firm perfected this system by separating the stop/start functions from that of resetting. This patented modernization made it possible to add several successive times without returning the hands to zero. This proved particularly useful both for timing sports competitions and for calculating flight times. Breitling, a leader in the field of mechanical chronographs, is also in the forefront of electronics in watchmaking. The brand has established itself in the frontline of innovation by creating the Emergency, the world’s first wristwatch equipped with an authentic integrated dual frequency personal locator beacon. This watch was even instrumental in saving two lives. Reuters reported that in January 2003 two British pilots, Squadron Leader Steve Brooks and Flight Lieutenant Hugh Quentin-Smith, crashed their helicopter in Antarctica and were rescued after activating their Breitling Emergency transmitter watches.
