  • Description
Personal Letter with 1944 Yankees Signatures from 1010 WINS Radio Station Including Joe McCarthy, John Lindell, Hershel Martin, Oscar Grimes and 21 other Team Members

Item Description
This personal letter from one of the longest running radio stations in American history is addressed to an Arthur Stern. The letter is from sports broadcaster, Don Dunphy, who graciously accompanies his personal note with a list of signatures from the 1944 Yankees. Don Dunphy was a very popular sports radio broadcaster and National Radio Hall of Fame member. In the letter, Dunphy mentions that the recipient is ill and that the list of autographs is on behalf of their Gillette razor sponsors. The list of autographs is written on WINS stationary and includes signatures of famous top players such as John Lindell, Hershel Martin, George (Snuffy) Stirnweiss, Nick Etten, Monk Dubiel, Oscar Grimes and manager, Joe McCarthy. Most notably on this document are the three key players' signatures Joe McCarthy, John Lindell, Hershel Martin. Joe McCarthy (April 21, 1887 – January 13, 1978) was a world renowned baseball manager. During his prolific and World Series winning career, Joe McCarthy managed the Chicago Cubs, the New York Yankees, and the Boston Red Sox. His signature at the top of the document is clearly legible and adds to the rarity of this piece. In addition to McCarthy's signature, John (Johnny) Lindell also appears on this document. Johnny Lindell (August 30, 1916 – August 27, 1985) played for the New York Yankees from 1941 to 1950. In 1944, Johnny Lindell was an outfielder and top ranked batter for the New York Yankees. His signature appears 5th in the list and is clearly written. Much loved Hershel Martin is also shown in this list of autographs. Hershel (Hersh) Martin (September 19, 1909 – November 17, 1980) was on the New York Yankees for just two seasons. His signature is especially rare because of this. Martin was also an outfielder and top ranked batter for the team. His signature is clearly seen 5th from the bottom of the document. The documents are very old, but overall in very good condition. There is some slight discoloration from what appears to be water damage. However, the signatures are still clearly legible.

For an additional $195.00, these documents can be professionally framed to your specifications. Please contact us for further information.
