James Earle Fraser redesigned the nations five-cent piece in 1913, creating a coin known as the Buffalo Nickel. On the obverse, he featured the right-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain, said to have been crafted from the facial features of three different tribal leaders of the early 20th century.

On the reverse of all Buffalo Nickel coins, the left-profile image of a massive buffalo. Known as the American bison, this particular beast was created with Black Diamond as its inspiration. That bison was a resident of New York Citys Central Park Zoo in the early years of the 20th century.
