Morgan Silver Dollar coins debuted in 1878 after a five-year hiatus in the production of silver dollars in the US. The Fourth Coinage Act passed in 1873 ended the monetization of silver apr57 and resulted in the temporary end of silver dollars, which at the time had the Seated Liberty design on its obverse.

The obverse of these Morgan Silver Dollars features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design continues the tradition of Greco-Roman inspired images of Liberty on US coins in the 19th century. Her head is surrounded by the phrase E Pluribus Unum, the date mark, and 13 stars.

On the reverse of Morgan Silver Dollar coins is an early depiction of the US heraldic eagle. A smaller bird than typically portrayed on modern coins, and lacking a shield, this design still includes the bird with wings spread wide and clutching the arrows of war with the olive branch of peace in the other talon.
