Item Description:

Rare, 19th Century, hand-written letter, with envelope signed by President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis to his Brigadier General Henry Rootes Jackson after the Battle of Cheat Mountain. Dated October 9, 1861 Davis references Jackson’s previous missive to allay his fears of Davis’ loss of confidence in his generals.  The Battle of Cheat Mountain (September 12-15, 1861), and also known as the Battle of Cheat Summit Fort, was General Robert E. Lee’s first foray in the Civil War.  General Lee’s first command resulted in a loss for the Confederacy.  This loss can be attributed to the catastrophic failure of communication on the battlefield.  While Jackson was creating a diversion in front of the Summit Fort, Col. Albert Rust was to approach from the rear.  Meanwhile, Gen. S.R. Anderson was to lead a detachment route along a trail Gen. Lee had found.  Unfortunately, heavy rainfall and early discovery of the confederate troops led to the plan being deserted entirely and a retreat called.  Despite this referenced “odium of failure” Davis encourages Jackson to not take criticism from the press to heart and that he has every confidence in him. To H.R. Jackson, this sentiment must have been incredibly significant as the words of encouragement were coming from no other than the President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis.

Jefferson Davis served as President of the Confederacy from 1861 until its defeat and downfall in 1865. Born in Kentucky in 1808 and raised in Mississippi, Davis graduated from West Point in 1828. Following brief service in Congress and military duty in the war with Mexico, he served as secretary of war (1853-1857) under Franklin Pierce. In that post, he oversaw the construction of the new Senate and House wings of the U.S. Capitol. Davis returned to the Senate in 1857, on the eve of the Civil War. As talk of secession filled the Senate Chamber, Davis joined the "Committee of Thirteen" to seek compromise and avoid war. When Mississippi left the Union, however, Davis resigned. He bid farewell to the United States in January of 1861. A month later, he became the Provisional president of the Confederacy and went on to officially become the elected President of the Confederacy. Captured by Union troops in 1865, Davis was indicted for treason and imprisoned for two years. He died in New Orleans in 1889.

Henry Rootes Jackson was a Major General in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Jackson was born in Athens, Georgia. He graduated with honors from Yale University. Enlisting in the Confederate army in 1861, he served as a judge in Confederate courts. Promoted in June to brigadier general, he later led troops during the Western Virginia campaign, seeing action at the Battle of Cheat Mountain. In December, he was promoted to major general of state militia for Georgia. Returning to Confederate service in September 1863, he led a brigade during the Atlanta Campaign. Jackson was captured at the Battle of Nashville and was paroled from Fort Warren, Massachusetts, on July 8, 1865. After the war, he resumed his law practice and political career, being named minister to Mexico from 1885 to 1886.

The envelope reads as follows:

“Brig. Gen. H.R. Jackson
Army of the North West
Cheat Mountain VA ,Staunton Pa”

The letter reads as follows:

Richmond, VA,
October 9th, 1861,
Brig. Genl. H.R. Jackson,
Army of the N. West,
General:

In acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 27th ult. [previous month] with its enclosures, in reference to a published article — of which you enclose a copy— in relation to the operations about Cheat Mountain, I must confess that I had not seen the article to which you refer prior to its receipt in your letter. And While regretting that you should be so disturbed about it, I am happy to inform you that there is nothing in the report of the Gen. Lee tending in the least to throw the “odium of failure” upon yourself or any one else in the command.
Commending your year, and regretting that you should have attached too much importance to the criticisms of a public journal, I have to offer you my best wishes for your future success and happiness.

I am very Respectfully & truly yours,
Jefferson Davis
