Queen Elizabeth IIs long reign has resulted in a long list of potential portraits featuring the Queen on British coinage. These Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins from the reign of Elizabeth II include one of four possible designs stretching from the second-generation design to the most recent fifth-generation design.

Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins in the modern coinage (post-1817) were available from introduction until 1926. In 1980, the Royal Mint reintroduced the Great Britain Gold Sovereign coin with the second-generation design of Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin on the obverse. This design was in use until 1984.

From 1985 until 1997, the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins featured the third-generation portrait from Raphael Maklouf. This is considered by many to be the most ornate design with Elizabeth II wearing the royal diadem typically worn to and from the State Opening of Parliament.

Gold Sovereign coins issued from 1998 to 2015 have the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. All Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins issued after 2016 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty at the age of 89 as created by Jody Clark of the Royal Mint.

The reverse of all Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins from the reign of Elizabeth II features the same design. The St. George image on horseback as he stampedes over a dragon is included on the reverse. This was designed in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci for the first modern gold sovereigns issued for King George III.

The Royal Mint has issued the Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins since 1980 during Elizabeth IIs rule. There was no 1981 issue of the coins and most of the specimens struck during this time period are proof products and were not available in a apr57 version.
