ROBERT E LEE CIVIL WAR LETTER TO GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA - $40,000 APPRAISAL VALUE!

ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a letter from the confederate army general Robert E. Lee to John Milton, the governor of Florida during the American Civil War regarding the distribution of troops there. The letter is two pages, front and back, and was hand written and signed by Lee.
Robert Lee was a confederate army general who held the title of commander of the confederate states army. In his letter he references other civil war generals as well, including colonel Joseph Davis, nephew of the confederate president Jefferson Davis; Albert Johnson, the highest ranking officer to die in the civil war; and other various military leaders of the confederacy. After the war, Lee was not arrested or punished (although he was indicted ), but he did lose the right to vote as well as some property. The letter is in very good condition; all of the writing is legible and there are only minor tears along the edges.

The letter reads as follows:
 Richmond VA
13 March 1862

His Excellency John Milton
Gov. of Florida
Gov:
I have had the honor to receive your letter of the 5th inst. from the hands of Hon: D S Walker [Samuel D. S. Walker, Confederate Corporal], enclosing a resolution passed by the executive council in relation to the Reg. commanded by Col Davis. [Joseph Davis, Confederate Colonel] This regiment was ordered to move to [Jupiter, Florida] in pursuance of instructions from the Sec. of War [Judah P Benjamin, Confederate cabinet member], and it is presumed in consideration of the time which has elapsed since the order was given that  it is already on the way to report to Gen. A S Johnson [Albert Sidney Johnson, Confederate General]. As regards my order of the 1st to Gen. Trapier [James Trapier, Confederate General] to which you call my attention. I would say that it was my intention that only Col Davis’s regiment shared more immediately. The rest were to be retained until all the public property, guns etc. secured. In the mean time I desired Gen. Trapier to see what arrangements could be made for the defense of the state, by organizing new troops for local defense, and it was then to be determined under the instructions from the War Dept., what other forces could be shared to reinstate our operations in the West. If an adequate force can be obtained, it is my own desire to hold the interim of the state to defend the St. John’s as well as the Apalachicola, and with this view I would suggest to Your Exc’y the importance of calling every available man in Florida into the field.
I am very respectfully your obedient servant,
  1. E. Lee [Robert E. Lee, Confederate General]
Gen. Comm
