This illustration shows an African American man seated outside of a log cabin. He is reading by a granddaughter who is racially mixed. This is a historical piece in the importance of the time of the 1800s. In 1859, while working as a correspondent for Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, the artist gained notoriety during the trial of John Brown when he was expelled from Charleston (VA, now WV) because he was suspected of being a correspondent for the New York Tribune. His engravings and sketches appeared in Harper's Weekly and Leslie's from 1859 to 1876 under the signature W.S.L.J. or W.J.; he also produced at least twenty of the portraits in Harper's History of the Great Rebellion.
