CHARLES NOLAN JEAN CARROLL SIGNED BRUNO OF HOLLYWOOD PHOTOGRAPH - $2K APR W/COA
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Presenting a rare and remarkable signed photograph from Bruno of Hollywood, the esteemed New York studio operated by the talented brothers Anthony and Nick Bruno. Anthony Bruno photographed many Columbia Studios stars in Hollywood in his early career including Clark, Gable, Rudolph Valentino and Carmen Miranda. Once the studio was established in Carnegie Hall in 1934, the studio quickly garnered acclaim and took exquisite portraits of stars such as Carol Channing and Gypsy Rose Lee.
This particular photograph bears the signature of Charles R. Nolan (1901-1967), publisher of the esteemed monthly magazine "The Talent Scout." Known for its insightful coverage of emerging talent in the entertainment industry, "The Talent Scout" provided a platform for aspiring artists and celebrated figures alike.
The handwritten message on the photograph, addressed to the esteemed Jean Carroll, offers a glimpse into the camaraderie and mutual admiration shared among icons of the entertainment world. Jean Carroll, an American actress and comedian, rose to prominence with her comedic wit and charm during the 1950s and 1960s. As part of the comedy dance team Carroll and Howe, alongside her husband Buddy Howe, Carroll captivated audiences with her unique blend of humor and talent.
Notably, the reference to Carroll as "the poor man's Martha Raye" reflects the recognition of her comedic prowess and the comparison to the iconic Martha Raye, known affectionately as "The Big Mouth." Raye, a beloved comic actress and singer, achieved fame in both movies and television, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment landscape.
This signed photograph serves as a precious memento of a bygone era, capturing the essence of talent, camaraderie, and artistic expression. For entertainment historians, photography enthusiasts, and collectors alike, this artifact represents a cherished piece of memorabilia—an enduring testament to the rich tapestry of talent and creativity that has shaped the world of entertainment.
