The Aztec Empire was a dominant military force for nearly a 100 years spanning the 15th and 16th centuries in what is now central Mexico. The empire consisted of three city-states that had banned together, with the Aztec warriors from Tenochtitlan forming the backbone of the Aztec forces. Known for their advanced fighting skills as a unit and individual ferocity in battle, Aztec warriors were among the best the world has ever seen.

On the obverse side of the 1 oz Aztec Warrior Copper Round is a depiction of one of the elite members of the Aztec army. An imposing physical specimen, this warrior possesses more than just brute strength to help win the day on the field of battle. He wields a shield in one hand that is draped in feathers along the bottom and is ready to thrust his spear into an enemy. The ornate plumage on his helmet identifies him as one of the elite, high-ranking members of the Aztecs warfighting forces.

When it comes to elite forces in the Aztec army, there were two distinct classes of warriors. The eagle warrior was one of those elite forces and the members of these units are considered comparable to todays special forces and wore helmets with ornate plumage and the open beak of a bird, just like the warrior on this rounds obverse. Jaguar warriors, on the other hand, were elite forces used in the frontlines of battle. These individuals often wore jaguar pelts and fought with a shield and spear.

The reverse face of the 1 oz Aztec Warrior Copper Round includes a common design element that is used across this six-round series. The central piece of the design is the helmet of a Spartan warrior. Behind it are a number of weapons of war used by Spartan soldiers, including a battle axe, spear, and short sword.
