In this APR 57 product listing, you have the chance to purchase 5 Pounds of Wheat Pennies struck by the United States Mint throughout the first half of the 20th century. This mixed bag contains Wheat Pennies with a variety of mint marks from 1909 to 1958. The most common remaining mint marks on the coins come from the 1940s and 1950s, with most pennies in the series containing 95% copper.

The United States Mint initially struck pennies in 1793 using 100% copper. By 1864, the coins were lowered to 95% copper with zinc and tin to balance the composition of the coins. The major exception to this came in 1943 when the US Mint issued zinc-coated steel coins in an effort to redirect copper and tin to the war effort.

On the obverse side of Wheat Pennies is the left-profile portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. The nations 16th President is known as the Man Who Saved the Union for leading the United States in its battle against the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. This portrait from Victor David Brennan became the first in American history to depict a US president on a widely circulated coin.

The reverse of Wheat Pennies includes engravings of E Pluribus Unum, One Cent, and United States of America. The latter engravings are set in the center of the design field with two wheat stalks curved on either side to frame the wording.

Wheat Pennies were produced from 1909 to 1958 by the US Mint. There are a few unique coins in the series, such as the 1909 Wheat Pennies that featured Brennans VDB initials prominently on the reverse. The initials were promptly removed for 1910 coins following public backlash, but later returned in 1918 on the obverse off the shoulders of President Lincoln.
