  • Description

Among the many popular coin designs from American history is the lineup of Barber coinage. Named after the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who created all the obverse and reverse designs, the Barber coinage includes the US dime, quarter, and half-dollar. Today, 90% Silver Barber Quarters are available to purchase from APR 57.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in a canvas or plastic bag including 400 Quarters in total.
  • Individual face values of $.25 (USD) fully backed by the US government.
  • Designed by Charles E. Barber.
  • Obverse features the depiction of Liberty.
  • Reverse includes the heraldic eagle design.

Beginning in the late 1880s, the US Mint moved to replace many of the Seated Liberty designs in use on its circulation coinage. Seated Liberty featured on most of the US denominations dating back to 1830, and the mint decided it was time to replace the design.

US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, who held the post from 1879 until his death in 1917, completed the design of both the obverse and reverse fields of the dime, quarter, and half dollar coin. His Barber Quarter design was the same as that used on the dime and half-dollar coins.

iberty on the obverse of all the coins features Liberty facing the right wearing a pileus, which is a crown fashioned out of an olive branch. She also wears a small headband with the word Liberty inscriped on it. His Liberty head is considered a purely classical design, rendered in the ancient Roman style.

On the obverse of all Barber Quarters is the right-profile portrait of Liberty. The engravings on each of the coins designed by Barber differs slightly, with the quarter featuring Liberty, the motto In God We Trust, and the year of issue. Barbers coinage was in use from 1892 until 1916, at which point the Barber Quarter was replaced by the Standing Liberty design.

The reverse of the 90% Silver Barber Quarters includes the heraldic eagle depiction created specifically by Barber for the quarter. This image features the American bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, and appeared only on the Barber quarter and half-dollar, not the dime.

Each 90% Silver Barber Quarter in this listing has .900 pure silver content. The date of issues available range only from 1892 to 1916, the years of availability for Barber quarters before they were taken out of circulation. This listing bears a total face value of $100 (USD) and offers quarters in average circulated condition, indicating the presence of wear and tear from use in commercial exchange.
