The Royal Canadian Mint undertook an ambitious plan to help finance the hosting of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal with the release of 30 different coins. The series was to feature 28 silver coins and 2 gold coins. The silver coins were set to release with $5 and $10 face values and seven different design concepts.

Those concepts were, in order: geographic, Olympic motifs, early Canadian sports, Olympic track and field, Olympic water sports, Olympic team and body contact sports, and Olympic motifs. There was a single series of four coins issued in 1973 and two series each issued in 1974, 1975, and 1976. Each series included two designs used on $5 and $10 silver coins.

On the obverse of all 1976 Canadian $5 Olympic Silver Coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait of Her Majesty is the third-generation design and was created by Arnold Machin depicting her figure at the age of 39.

There were four different designs offered on the reverse of Canadian $5 Olympic Coins and include fencing, boxing, the Olympic Village, and the Olympic flame.
