HISTORICAL LETTER FROM HAMILTON FISH TO JAMES N. TYNER - $20K APPRAISAL VALUE

ITEM DESCRIPTION:


    This original signed historically significant document from United States Secretary of State, Hamilton Fish, is an official declaration of the appointment of James N. Tyner to the position of Postmaster General. James N. Tyner is the 29th postmaster general of the Unites States. The letter is dated Washington, July 12th 1876, coincidentally 100 years after the independence of Unites States. The letter reads:

Sir:

            The President having, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate…..

Appointed you to be the Postmaster General of the United States…. 

I herewith enclose you Commission. You will be pleased to inform this department of the receipt of it, and, should it be accepted, of the name of the State or county in which you were born. I also enclose a blank for of the oath of allegiance, which, in the event of your acceptance you will please execute and return to this Department for file.

A former New York Senator, Hamilton Fish served as the United States Secretary of State from March 17, 1869 to March 12, 1877. He is one of the most highly regarded and recognized Secretaries of State. Prior to his position as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of State, he supported Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War and was an integral part of his presidential commission. The letter's recipient, James N. Tyner, served as the United States Postmaster General from July 12, 1876 to March 3, 1877.
