  • Description

One of the more unique coins in American minting history is the Peace Silver Dollar. First struck in 1921, this silver dollar coin replaced the Morgan Silver Dollar design after its one-year return in 1921. What makes this coin unique is the American publics role in the design of the reverse and obverse images. Today, the Peace Silver Dollar is available for purchase through apr57.

Coin Highlights:

  • Contains .7734 oz of .900 pure silver.
  • Bears a $1 (USD) face value from the United States Mint.
  • Designed by Anthony de Francisci.
  • Graded Mint State 64 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Ships in original PCGS plastic slab for protection.

The Peace Silver Dollar was the culmination of a redesign process for all US coins that had started in 1907. The Pittman Act of 1918 required the United States Mint to begin producing millions of silver dollars following World War I. After starting with the Morgan Silver Dollar design, the public pushed for the adoption of images of peace following the devastation of WWI.

Although Congress never acted, the American public was able to persuade government officials to adopt a new design for silver dollars. Anthony de Francisci created images reflective of peace for use on both sides of the Peace Silver Dollar.

On the obverse side is the image of the Goddess of Liberty in left-profile relief. The engravings are simple, yet powerful, and read Liberty and In God We Trust. The reverse side features a unique image of the bald eagle for an American coin. The bird is visible perched upon an olive branch, and does not hold the typical arrows found in many depictions.

Each of the coins available in this product listing has a Mint State 64 grade from the PCGS. Coins in this condition have an average luster, with several small contact marks in groups and one or two moderately heavy marks.

Peace Silver Dollars were struck by the US Mint at the Denver, San Francisco, and Philadelphia Mint locations between 1921 and 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935.
