ITEM DESCRIPTION
An original etching on paper by prolific Dutch artist, Karel Dujardin. This piece dates from 1652 and it’s titled “Two donkeys standing in a grassy yard, one in profile view facing right and another behind in three-quarter view, a dog and a building wall with two windows beyond” This piece is in perfect condition for its age; it is signed “K.D.I 1652” on the top right corner as part of the plate, and is framed with an off-white mat in a black plastic frame.
Karel Dujardin (1626-1678) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Although he did a few portraits and a few history paintings of religious subjects, most of his work is small Italianate landscape scenes with animals and peasants, and other genre scenes. Dujardin spent two extended periods, at the beginning and end of his career, in Italy, and most of his paintings and landscape etchings have an Italian or Italianate setting. His works are part of museum collections, including the Met.
