    ITEM DESCRIPTION

This is an original copperplate engraving by prolific German Reinaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). With high detail, this skillfully made print depicts a scene where 3 men, apparently peasants engage in a conversation. What we actually see here are 3 men behaving illegally; back then, farmers were not allowed to carry a sword with them. And certainly didn't usually own a sword, as it was more expensive than a farmer could typically afford. The knife that the farmer wears on his belt on the right is big enough to serve as a weapon. The man in the middle reaches under his doublet. The man in the middle is not a farmer, but an ottoman. Ever since the Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453, fear of their armies had raged in Europe. In 1525 the peasants actually banded together to put an end to their oppression. The peasants' war broke out. In this context, the engraving is sometimes seen as a premonition of the uprisings and referred to as the “Rütli oath of the peasants”.

The print is in pristine condition and is signed with the distinctive artist’s monogram on the center bottom as part of the plate and is framed with a gray and silver painted wood frame and beige matte.
