CHARLES CATTON JR "THE MARGATE HOY" 1785 COLORED ETCHING AND AQUATINT - $8K APPRAISAL VALUE!
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This humorous print depicts a number of landsmen and women struggling to keep their lunch in check while sailors work around them. One woman doses herself with a bottle, a Reverend struggles to cope by reading from his book, and others visually express their distress. This print would later be erroneously attributed to Thomas Rowlandson, as the style and subject are certainly in keeping with his works. The print is in excellent condition and is signed ‘C. Catton Jr.’ on the bottom left corner as part of the plate and inscribed ‘London Publith 19th Aug, 1785 by W. Hinton No° 5 Sweetings Alley Royal Exchange, Cornhill’ on the center bottom as part of the print.
Charles Catton the younger (1756-1819) was an English slave owner, topographical artist, illustrator and theatrical scene-painter. He was the son of Charles Catton the elder. He received art tuition from his father and also studied at the Royal Academy schools. He travelled extensively through England and Scotland, making sketches, some of which were afterwards engraved and published. He was known as a scene-painter for the theatre, and also as a topographical artist.
