However, the association of the Headless Horseman with modern celebrations of Halloween is much more modern than its traditional root tales in folklore. Tales of the Headless Horseman are said to date back to the Middles Ages in various cultures around the world, but the most prominent versions of the story in Western society come from England, Ireland, Scotland, and the United States. The oldest written tales of the Headless Horseman date to the 14th century in England when a poem written about Gawain and the Green Knight features a headless figure on horseback, a Green Knight who was beheaded by Gawain.
Washington Irving brought the figure not only to American folklore, but also created the close association of the Headless Horseman with Halloween. Irvings The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set during the American Revolution when a German Hessian horseman is killed during the Battle of White Plains in 1776. He became headless as a result of an American cannonball. His comrades quickly bury him without his head, resulting in his body rising from the dead and riding around in search of his head.
The obverse of the 1 oz SilverTowne Headless Horseman Silver Bar features a depiction of the Headless Horseman. He is depicted riding his horse with a moon in the background field with ghoulish text wishing a Happy Halloween. Irvings story of the Headless Horseman riding around in search of his head was quickly adapted in the 20th century to take place on Halloween night, which coincides with the timing of the original battle in which he lost his head.
On the reverse field of 1 oz SilverTowne Headless Horseman Silver Bars, you will find a blank field. The mint leaves this field blank on purpose for custom engraving on special orders. Though the field is blank, there is a wreath border on either side with inscriptions of the weight, purity, and metal content.
These 1 oz SilverTowne Headless Horseman Silver Bars are available to you for purchase brand new from the mint. Each one is packaged in its own protective plastic sleeve. You can get multiples in sheets of 20 bars or boxes of 500 bars.
