The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States in the 1880s as a gift from the people of France, and designed by a French artist of the time. Constructed of copper on the outer layer, Liberty was actually constructed in totality in France, disassembled, and shipped to the United States where it was then put back together in New York Harbor.

Her image is a depiction of the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. She stands in a robe with one hand held above her head with a torch, while she holds a tablet evoking the laws of the land in her other hand. The Statue of Libertys tablet has the inscription of Americas date of independence, July 4, 1776.
