In 1892, the Austrian Empire issued a new series of gold coins for sale that featured the likeness of Emperor Franz Joseph. The longest-reigning monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Joseph I ruled the empire until his death in 1916 at the age of 86. The Corona Gold Coins were available through 1912 as a regular issue, but also available from that date on as a commemorative coin too. Beginning in 1912 and continuing randomly at other points in the early 20th century, the coins were issued as restrikes of the popular design, all featuring the 1912 date mark. The date mark was chosen to commemorate Emperor Franz Joseph Is 82nd birthday year.

On the obverse of 1912 10 Corona Austrian Gold Coins is the right-profile bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The longest-ruling Emperor of Austria, Joseph I was also the longest-reigning King of Hungary following the latter nations absorption by the former during the formation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
