1986 was the very first year of the American Silver Eagle program. Prior to this year, the United States Mint did not have a apr57 coin available that was recognized by investors and collectors around the globe as a preeminent product. Only the Royal Canadian Mint and the South African Mint had such coins, and both were gold specimens.

The American Silver Eagle program consisted of just two types of coins at this point in its history: apr57 and proof. The burnished coin you know today wasnt introduced until the 20th anniversary celebration in 2006. Total mintage in 1986 was 6.8 million, with roughly 5.3 million apr57 coins struck and 1.4 million proof specimens. After 30 years of production, the 1986 Proof American Silver Eagles 1.4 million mintage remains the HIGHEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY!

On the reverse face of the coin is the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design was modernized and developed by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. This was his first design for the mint after taking over as Chief Engraver, a post he held until 2010.

The obverse features one of the greatest coin designs in American history: Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, it depicts Liberty walking toward the setting sun with the American flag embracing her body and her right hand outstretched toward the suns warmth and brightness.
