When the American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986, it was met with great enthusiasm from investors and collectors alike. Production numbers were an impressive 6.8 million in the first year, and nearly doubled to 12.3 million the following year in 1987.

By 1991, the American Silver Eagle had finally grown again in popularity to surpass the introductory 1986 releases of the coin. Following the boom in 1987, the program dropped to 5.5 million, and grew steadily in each year from 1988 to 1991.

A total of 7.1 million apr57 coins were struck in 1991, a figure which would not be matched again until 1999. The proof 1991 American Silver Eagle coin boasted a mintage of 511,925, which actually represented a steep decline from the mintage of 695,000 in 1990. One of the primary factors in the growth of the program at this time was the low price of silver, which averaged $4.05/ounce throughout 1991, hitting a low of $3.61 during the year.

On the obverse of all American Silver Eagle coins youll find the image of Walking Liberty, which represents how Liberty guides the nation toward a brighter tomorrow. The reverse of the coin honors the heraldic eagle, which is captured in beautiful, modern imagery by John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1986 to 2010.
