  • Description

After a decade of popularity and steady mintage levels, the American Silver Eagle coin started its second decade of existence on a relatively flat note. The mid-1990s marked a time of declining demand for the American Silver Eagle, and the 1995 American Silver Eagle coin could not do much to reverse that trend, resulting in a very low mintage release.

Coin Highlight:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip, sealed tube of 20 coins, or Monster Box of 500 coins.
  • Protect your investment with 40.6mm Direct Fit Air-Tite Capsules or 40.6mm Air-Tite Coin Tubes, which hold 20 coins.
  • Contains 1 oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty on the obverse.
  • John Mercantis heraldic eagle on the reverse.

The 10th issue of the American Silver Eagle was marked by the special striking of a one-time additional proof in the American Eagle series. Although all proof coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, a special West Point Mint proof was struck in 1995 as well.

This extra proof American Silver Eagle coin, known as the 1995-W American Silver Eagle, was sold only as part of the 10th Anniversary American Eagle Five Coin Set, which included the W Proof and each of the four weights in the American Gold Eagle proof collection.

In total, the US Mint struck 4.6 million apr57 coins, 438,511 proof specimens (with a max set at 500,000), and 30,125 of the special 1995-W Proof American Silver Eagle coins. These W proofs are considered quite rare today, and although perfect certified versions of both proofs are still available these days, a 1995-W goes for well above $10,000.

On the obverse of the American Silver Eagle coin is the image of Walking Liberty from Adolph A. Weinman. The reverse features the heraldic eagle of the United States, which was refined and modernized in 1986 by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
