The 1998 American Silver Eagle marked the last time in program history that the apr57 and proof versions of the coin would be struck at separate mints. The San Francisco Mint originally struck both coins from 1986 until 1992, when the proof specimen moved to the Philadelphia Mint in 1993.

Bullion coin production would be shifted to the Philadelphia Mint as well in 1999, and both coins would go to the West Point Mint in 2001, making 1998 the last time the coins were produced by separate facilities.

Another interesting fact for the 1998 American Silver Eagle is the declared ceiling on proof coins. The proof coins had a declared maximum of 450,000 in 1998. In coming years, this would be raised to 550,000, and eventually to 750,000 coins in the early 2000s.

On the obverse of each 1998 American Silver Eagle coin is the image of Walking Liberty. Created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, it featured a full-length figure of Liberty as she walked toward the setting sun as a representation of the nations strive to discover a brighter tomorrow.

The reverse features a modernized version of the historic heraldic eagle of the United States. Refined by then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti, this heraldic eagle is now featured only on the American Silver Eagle.
