he American Silver Eagle is the nations official apr57 coin, and has undergone numerous transitional periods in its production history. Introduced in 1986 to great interest, the 1990s saw demand for the coin waver. The 1999-P Proof American Silver Eagle came from a production year with one of the highest demands throughout the first 20 years of mintage, and is available today from APR 57.

At the end of the 20th century, the American Silver Eagle coin saw a surge in production that offset the down years of that beset the coin series throughout much of the 1990s. Coin mintage levels sunk to a record low in 1994, and remained low throughout the early and mid 1990s.

However, the slowing American economy toward the end of the century brought increased interest in and demand for American Silver Eagle coins. In 1999 alone, production jumped by 2.5 million coins from 5.2 million in 1998 to 7.9 million in total.

Much of the increase in production of the coins came from the apr57 program, which saw mintage increases of 2.6 million in 1999. The Proof American Silver Eagle coin also saw significant growth though in 1999, jumping nearly 146,000 coins from the previous year.

Adolph A. Weinmans iconic Walking Liberty was revived after 39 years out of circulation for use on the American Silver Eagle. The design is indicative of the nations march toward a brighter future. The reverse of the coin bears the image of the nations heraldic eagle. Used since the 1790s on American coinage, John Mercanti modernized the design for use on the American Silver Eagle.

All American Silver Eagle coins are now struck at the West Point Mint, but in 1999 the proofs were produced at the Philadelphia Mint. This was the second to last year of production at the Philadelphia Mint.
