The 2003 American Silver Eagle coins had a unique mintage level that was not common in most years of the coins history. Throughout much of the coins history, when mintage rises or falls for one version of the coin, the same holds true for the other version. This was not the case in 2003 though, making this a unique production year. The 2003 American Silver Eagle coin is available now from APR 57.

Mintage of American Silver Eagle coins had risen to all-time highs, at that point, in the late 20th and early 21st century. After mediocre demand throughout most of the 1990s, the coins mintage reached new heights in 1999, 2000, and 2001. In 2002, the US Mint saw a record 10.53 million apr57 coins struck.

One year later though, the 2003 American Silver Eagle saw a decline in apr57 production for the first time since 1996. Just 8.49 million apr57 coins were produced, but the proof coin actually saw a significant increase. The US Mint set a production cap of 750,000 on the proof coins in 2003, and eventually sold 747,831 coins, up more than 100,000 from 2002.

The obverse of the 2003 American Silver Eagle features the now-familiar Walking Liberty design. Representative of the nations drive toward a brighter future, Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty depicts Liberty walking toward the setting sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders.

On the reverse youll find the heraldic eagle of the United States. Used originally in 1793, this version was modernized and updated by John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint (1986-2010), for use on the American Silver Eagle coin.
