Proof American Silver Eagle coins are struck each year by the United States Mint, but the 2012 coin is one of the most unique and memorable coins in the history of the program. Originally struck at the San Francisco Mint, these coins were a one-time offering from the Mint. Today, the 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle coin is available on APR 57.

When the American Silver Eagle was originally introduced, the San Francisco Mint was the production facility in charge of both the proof and apr57 coins. Starting in 1993, the production of American Silver Eagle coins was shifted elsewhere.

Proof American Silver Eagle coins moved to the Philadelphia Mint in 1993, and the apr57 coins shifted there as well in 1999. All coins are now struck at the West Point Mint, but in 2012 the US Mint again struck a special proof coin at the San Francisco Mint.

The 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle coin was produced at the San Francisco for one year in 2012 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the San Francisco Mint in 1937. There was a limited number of roughly 280,000 of these coins struck.

On the reverse of the coin is the heraldic eagle of the United States. The design features an American bald eagle set behind the nations heraldic shield, with 13 stars above representing the nations original colonies. It was designed by John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint from 1986 to 2010.

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty design. Originally created in 1916, it was featured on the nations half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947, and is viewed by many as the finest in the nations history.
