ANTIQUE MAJOLICA ITALIAN CACHEPOT
WITH WARRIOR PORTRAIT

Item Description
This is a 17th Century Italian Bulb-Shaped Majolica Cachepot richly decorated with floral and foliate motifs, with a blue background. The piece features an oval portrait of a warrior, covered in a white tin glaze (which you can see on the inside against the terra cotta clay used to form the pieces). The piece is then hand painted and fired again to create the vibrant tones of blue, yellows, greens and pastels that are indicative of majolica ceramics.
Majolica is soft-paste earthenware that has been fired to the biscuit stage, then coated with an opaque lead or tin (or both) glaze, which is allowed to dry. After this preliminary glaze dries, the decoration is painted on with bright, colorful metal-oxide glazes. The piece is then fired again, resulting in the brilliant and glossy finish for which majolica is most well-known.
The vase is approximately 8" height. The art piece comes with a free certification of authenticity and $50,000 insurance value.
