One extremely rare and unusual letter was typed personally and signed by the great Arthur Godfrey on April 22, 1948 to the famous actress Diana Decker. Arthur Godfrey (1903-1983) began his radio career as a staff announcer on NBC (1930-1933). He moved to CBS in 1934, again as a staff announcer, but quickly became a personality with his own programs. Arthur Godfrey Time was broadcast from 1945-1972. In the late 1940s, Godfrey did three different CBS radio shows a day, one in the morning and two at night. He was enormously popular with his ukelele-playing folksy manner, earning around $400,000 a year (even before additional exposure on TV after 1948 made him a broadcasting superstar). CBS estimated in the 1940s that 40 million people listened to him at least once a week. Godfrey owned a racehorse, Lord Willin', a name inspired by his closing phrase, promising to return "Lord willin' and the crik don't rise."
In this letter, Arthur Godfrey is writing to Diana Decker. Diana Decker was an actress who had a very successful Hollywood career. Decker began her career with a role in the Linda Darnell romance "Saturday Island" (1952). Decker began to focus on film after appearing in "Lovers, Happy Lovers!" (1954) and "The Barefoot Contessa" (1954). Later in her career, Decker acted in "Lolita" (1961).
