1863 10 o'Clock AM
Dear... Smith,
I have arrived here with one bridge (2nd). The other brigade is at Raccoon, one regiment is at Summerville, a party is sent still further up the river. The Rebels are shelling Davies near Raccoon. My command is under cover, I have not replied to the enemy's guns, will (over page) do so as soon as I hear firing below me. Please inform me where Corp. Hodges, will be during the day. I will be between Morton and Raccoon.
Very Respectfully,
GA Custer.
Brig. Genl.
George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876) was a notable U.S. Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and American Indian Wars. Graduating from West Point, he ranked 34th in his class of 108 students. Custer's leadership abilities were recognized, leading to his promotion to brigadier general at just 23 years old. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Gettysburg and contributed to the Union's victories in the Overland Campaign and the Shenandoah Valley.
After the Civil War, Custer continued his military career, receiving a Regular Army commission as a lieutenant colonel. He was sent west to participate in the Indian Wars, primarily against the Lakota and Plains Peoples. Tragically, on June 25, 1876, during the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana, Custer and all the soldiers under his command were killed, an event famously known as "Custer's Last Stand."
