ITEM DESCRIPTION:
A military service certificate, in perfect condition with a few minor pressed out creases, recording the admittance in 1858 of J. Prescott Imlay into the 71st New York Infantry Regiment, later the National Guard. Imlay was wounded at the battle of Bull Run, the first Major Battle of the American Civil War. The certificate is signed by Captain Henry F. Metzler, 6 years ago a sword owned by him sold for 15000 dollars. As well as by Colonel Abram S. Vosburgh, the very first colonel of the Regiment, he died while serving in the Civil War and was honored by President Lincoln. The certificate bears an insignia depicting two women flanking an American eagle with the word “excelsior." This rare document is signed in black ink and framed with a gray mat and a black plastic frame.
The 71st New York State Militia was founded in the 1850s and saw action in the early battles of the Civil War, as well as providing soldiers for the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. Colonel Abraham Vosburgh, while serving in the Civil War commanding the 71st New York National Guard, died of disease on this date in 1861; President Abraham Lincoln laid a wreath on Vosburgh’s casket a few days later.
