Edward Everett (1794-1865) represented Massachusetts as a Whig in the House of Representatives (1825-1835) and in the U.S. Senate (1853-1854). He was Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840), U. S. Minister to Great Britain (1841-1845), President of Harvard (1846-1849), President Millard Fillmore's Secretary of State (1852-1853) and the Constitutional Union Party candidate for Vice President (with John Bell) in 1860, winning 39 electoral votes. In 1863, Everett shared the platform with President Lincoln at Gettysburg. Ordained a Unitarian Minister, Edward Everett was one of America's greatest orators. On Nov. 19, 1863, he was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where he delivered a two-hour oration.
