- Description
This is a personal rare handwritten signed letter from Edward Everett. This letter appears to be a thank you to a person of great value who has done a great deed for Everett. This is a very rare letter since this is very personal and in excellent mint condition. Edward Everett (1794-1865) was an American politician, religious leader and educator from Massachusetts as a Whig in the House of Representatives (1825-1835) and in the U.S. Senate (1853-1854). He was Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840), U. S. Minister to Great Britain (1841-1845), President of Harvard (1846-1849), President Millard Fillmore's Secretary of State (1852-1853) and the Constitutional Union Party candidate for Vice President (with John Bell) in 1860, winning 39 electoral votes. In 1863, Everett shared the platform with President Lincoln at Gettysburg. Ordained a Unitarian Minister, Edward Everett was one of America's greatest orators. When Abraham Lincoln became president, the Civil War broke out. Everett had been calmer about slavery, but he was a strong Unionist. He worked hard to raise support for the Union through speaking in public. In November 1863, when the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was dedicated, Everett was the main speaker. His two-hour speech was before the much shorter, but now more famous Gettysburg Address by President Lincoln. Everett was moved by the short speech and wrote to Lincoln, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes."
