HENRY M. TELLER SEC OF INT. FOR PRESIDENT ALS L FOR GOV C. 1884 - $10K APPRAISAL VALUE

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Extremely rare, one-of-a-kind, 19th-century typed and signed document 12.5" X 8" by Henry M. Teller on July 14th, 1884. This document is a lease signing of a property in Washington D.C. that the U.S. government is buying that they think is a suitable building named the Alfred D. Jessup Estate at the time for use to become a Pension office. This property was 1117 & 1119 Pennsylvania and the white house is right next at 1600 Pennsylvania so this is very impressive because this was a lease signing for a new Government building in 1884.

HENRY MOORE TELLER (1830-1914) was the first United States Senator from Colorado (1876-1882, 1885-1909) and one of the first Senators to represent that state. He was also Secretary of the Interior (1882-1885) under President Chester A. Arthur. It is very interesting because Chester A. Arthur was never actually elected, he succeeded after President James Garfield was assassinated. Teller was a leader of the Silver Republicans, which supported the free coinage of silver and bimetallism and which split in the 1890s from the main Republican Party, which supported the gold standard. His most important legislative act was probably his amendment to the United States' declaration of war against Spain in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Teller sponsored this amendment to prevent the United States from annexing Cuba, thought at the time to be a major reason for the Spanish-American War. His amendment was largely overridden in 1901 by yet another amendment - this one by Senator Orville H. Platt - which gave the United States broad powers over Cuba, as well as economic and military territories on the island like Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Folds, creased through "T" of "Teller".

This lease was also signed by David Weatherly Jr., Stephen A. Caldwell, and John C. Bullitt who were trustees of the Alfred D. Jessup Estate. The lease covers a period of one year at $19,000.00 a year for the building! This is a super rare and interesting historical document of what a lease looked like that the U.S. Government bought to become a Government building.
