ITEM DESCRIPTION
Etching by the famous painter, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator Jean Émile Laboureur (1877-1943). ‘Balcon sur le Mer’ or ‘Balcony on the Sea’ is one of the artist’s finest lithographs and depicts Laboureur’s wife Suzanne at their home Le Croisic in the Loire-Atlantique region of France. Laboureur’s work was influenced by Post Impressionism, Primitivism, like that of Paul Gauguin, and Cubism. He has been considered by some scholars to be a late Cubist. The majority of his oeuvre is in book illustration.
The artist's signature is on the bottom left and the edition number "31/57" is on the bottom right, both are written in pencil. An L is signed on the bottom right of the etching itself. It is surrounded by a white matting and a wooden frame.
