ITEM DESCRIPTION:
A beautiful architectural etching from 1795, attributed to Jonathan Fisher. It was produced this print after obtaining permission from President Charles W. Elliot to reproduce an original painting depicting a north-west view of Hollis, Harvard and Massachusetts Halls, at Cambridge. This piece is in excellent condition for its age showing a beautiful yellow patina, it is signed in pencil on the bottom right corner, and is frame with a beige mat and a natural wooden frame.
Jonathan Fisher (1768-1847) was born in New Braintree, Massachusetts. His intellectual gifts were evident, and his family was able to send him to Harvard in 1788. Fisher was an artist, scientist, mathematician, surveyor, and writer of prose and poetry. He bound his own books, made buttons and hats, designed and built furniture, painted sleighs, was a reporter for the local newspaper, helped found Bangor Theological Seminar. Jonathan Fisher began making woodcuts in the summer of 1793 while home on vacation from his studies at Harvard.
