ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is a captivating masterpiece adorning the canvas: a portrait of deep emotion and exquisite artistry. This charming piece reveals the face of a woman, a moving embodiment of pain and solemnity. Let me introduce her as "The Mourner," a name befitting her solemn grace. Crafted by the skillful hand of renowned artist Marvin Cherney in the 1960's, each stroke whispers stories of deep feeling. The meticulous details, meticulously signed and titled, speak volumes about the artist's dedication to his craft. As his gaze wanders, he will notice the subtle nuances, the interplay of tones and the depth of contrasts. One cannot help but feel empathy for the lady depicted, as if she were in the midst of a veil of mourning, perhaps having recently said goodbye to a dear soul. Through the masterful interplay of light and shadow, Cherney captures the essence of her grief, inviting viewers to share in her silent lament.

           Marvin Cherney:

A distinguished figure in the realm of American art, Marvin Cherney solidified his place among creative luminaries through his exceptional talent and unwavering commitment to his craft. Born Marvin Samuel Cherney in 1925, he emerged as a beacon of artistic brilliance within his family of six siblings, against the backdrop of Baltimore's bustling cityscape. Their ancestral roots can be traced back to Abraham Czerna, a resilient individual who sought refuge in the promise of America, fleeing the turmoil of Russia with his wife, Mary, in 1907. Their journey took them to Baltimore, where they embraced the Cherney identity. . as proud citizens of their new homeland. Marvin's artistic journey began at the Maryland Institute of Art, where he honed his skills under the guidance of esteemed mentors. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he embarked on a transformative journey across Europe, immersing himself in its rich tapestry of cultures before returning to New York's vibrant art scene. In the bustling metropolis, Marvin not only found creative inspiration in Anna Marie Muhlenberg, but also a life partner. Together they embarked on the journey of parenthood, raising their three children: Mary, Katherine and Christopher. The peak of Marvin's artistic career was reached in 1953 when he presented his first solo exhibition, a testament to his burgeoning talent. With every brushstroke, he captured the essence of humanity, earning accolades and scholarships that underscored his brilliance. Throughout the 1950s, Marvin's works adorned prestigious galleries and museums, captivating audiences with his magnetic appeal. His paintings brought his subjects to life, evoking introspection and wonder. However, tragedy struck prematurely and cast a shadow over Marvin's promising career. At the age of 41, he left this world, leaving behind a profound legacy that transcended mortal confines. Although New York had been his home for two decades, Marvin's earthly journey ended where he began: in the comforting embrace of Baltimore. There, beneath the solemn earth, his spirit found eternal rest, forever a source of inspiration for future generations.
