This is an etching made by Maxime Lalanne rendering the rocky shoreline in the coastal town of Trouville, France on an overcast day. Out of the clouds, rays of sun shine on calm waters and black rocks portraying a soothing scene. Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) was a French artist mostly known for his etching works and charcoal drawings. He was an important contributor to the French etching revival in the 1860s. He exhibited etchings and drawings at the Salons until 1880, receiving medals for his etchings in 1866, 1873, 1874 and 1875. Cadart published Lalanne’s etchings until 1881. Lalanne also etched book illustrations, made etchings reproducing works by other artists for the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and L’Artiste, and drew illustrations for books and other journals. His works are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
