ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a commemorative carved wood relief plate that celebrates Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios. With great detail, this item features the iconic MGM Studios logo with the lion and film strips. The plate was created by True Distance, Inc. in Houston, TX. Given the positioning of the words, the profile of the lion, and the fabrication company's timeline, this interesting item was likely created in the mid- to late-1970s. The item is in excellent condition showing some signs of age; the logo is intact although the word ‘Studios’ that used to be placed below the logo is missing. An item that any film buff could appreciate.
Metro-Goldwin-Mayer (MGM) was founded in 1924 when the entertainment entrepreneur Marcus Loew gained control of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. MGM was the last studio to convert to sound pictures, but in spite of this fact, from the end of the silent film era through the late 1950s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was the dominant motion picture studio in Hollywood.
