MICKEY MANTLE #6 INSTEAD OF #7 BATTING NUMBER 1 NEW YORK YANKEES AMERICAN LEAGUE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OFFICIAL PROGRAM AND SCORE CARD AT YANKEES STADIUM BROOKLYN DODGERS CIRCA 1951 MINT CONDITION!
THIS COMES WITH A FREE $10,000.00 INSURANCE APPRAISAL AND A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY!
New York Yankees American League 50th anniversary Yankee Stadium 1951 entire booklet and program. This is exceptionally rare for two reasons. The first reason is this booklet is in mint condition. The second reason is that the scorecards, you see that they are virtually never filled in and never used. This was one of the few first games between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers with the Dodgers visiting the Yankees stadium. This was for the 50th season as well. The program was being sold for 10 cents which equals to almost 5 dollars today. What also makes this super rare, is that there was a young rookie that was up and coming in 1951 maybe you’ve heard of him, Mickey Mantle, and if you look in the program, He led off with batting number one this is one of the few times that he led off. If you also look at his number, you will see that he was #6 before he changed it to #7 So this is extraordinarily rare. It is one of the few programs showing Mickey Mantle leading off and Mickey Mantle as a rookie. Mickey was originally assigned #6 since he was seen as the next in line for Yankee greatness after Babe Ruth (#3), Lou Gehrig (#4), and Joe DiMaggio (#5). After a slow start, however, he was sent down. By the time he returned, Bobby Brown had returned from military service and with that, was given back the #6 he had worn for the previous four years. Mickey was given #7, previously worn that season by Cliff Mapes (traded to the Browns) and Bob Cerv (demoted), and he has owned it ever since. Based on all of these amazing things, this is an incomparable memorabilia. This comes with a $10,000.00 insurance appraisal and a lifetime authenticity certificate. Exactly as photographed.
Photo of the Day: “Number 6, Mickey Mantle”
Like Ruth’s number 3, Jordan’s 23 and Gretzky’s 99, Mickey Mantle is forever identified as wearing number 7. He put it on early in his career and kept it until his retirement in the spring of 1969. In the days before his rookie season, however, Mantle had actually been assigned number 6, and a rare early photo from his career now at auction shows him in action, wearing that unfamiliar digit on his back.
Mantle had been issued the number 6 when he was just 19. In the spring of 1951, he was showing some of the endless promise that had Yankee brass convinced he would become the franchise’s heir to Joe DiMaggio (#5). The 6 x 8 ¾” black and white news photo shows Mantle sliding into third during a game that spring. The back carries a date stamp of May 25 but it’s not known when the photo was actually taken.
Mantle’s flashes of brilliance dissipated in the summer and he was briefly sent down to the Yankees’ minor league franchise in Kansas City where his slump continued. He famously called his father to tell him he was quitting. Mutt Mantle drove from the family’s Oklahoma home and after a tongue-lashing, Mantle tearfully agreed to keep working. Soon he was back in New York and fulfilled his promise as one of the game’s all-time greats.
