This letter from 19th Century political radical, Thaddeus Stevens is a rare historical piece. The United States House Representative writes from Lancaster, Pennsylvania on what appears to be April 1st, 1855. The bulk of the letter is difficult to read which adds to the authenticity. Thaddeus Stevens had notoriously illegible handwriting. This letter addressed to a Colonel Sharb/Sharl appears as:
Dear sir
Since I wrote you this morning I’m (…. ) – the only “man” I wish (…) as the writer (….) repeat is an immediate don’t for the party of which twice be responsible as also in champions.

Regardless of the legibility, this item features Thaddeus Stevens's signature and is an interesting piece of historical memorabilia. Thaddeus Stevens was a fierce abolitionist and radical republican. He is credited with his impeachment efforts after Lincoln's assassination as well as his firm assertions for the rights of freed slaves during the Reconstruction. This piece is in fine condition despite its age. It is written on Thaddeus Stevens's classic stationary with a heart pattern watermark and a wax seal imprint is visible in the upper left corner.
