  • Description

The skull and crossbones symbol dates back nearly 800 years to the Late Middle Ages (1200-1520 AD) when it was originally used as a symbol of death. Fast forward to the era of colonization in the Western Hemisphere and the symbol remained a sign of death, but this death came at the end of a pirates pistol or blade. The Atlantis Mint uses the famous skull and crossbones as one of its primary design elements. Now that image is featured on a new 1 oz Atlantis Skull and Crossbones Hand Poured Silver Square available to purchase online from APR 57.

Square Highlights:

  • Squares arrive inside of protective plastic flips!
  • New product design and lineup from Atlantis Mint!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Obverse design includes the skull and crossbones.
  • No reverse design elements.
  • Hand-poured and hand-stamped at Atlantis Mint!

The use of the skull and crossbones has varied by time period and culture. The visual appearance of the skull and crossbones typically takes one of two forms. The most common is the use of a human skull with the two long bones crossing behind the skull near the jaw. An alternate option often employed the placement of the human skull above the two long bones which cross below the skull portion entirely.

It wasnt until after the Late Middle Ages that the skull and crossbones came to have wider uses. Pirates and other military units would use the image on flags as a symbol of their ferocity in battle. By the 18th and 19th centuries, the image was popular on crucifixes or worn on rosaries as a sign of Christs victory over death.

On the obverse of 1 oz Atlantis Skull and Crossbones Hand-Poured Silver Squares is the image of the common skull and crossbones design. The two long bones cross behind the human skull near the jaw and there are inscriptions of the squares weight, purity, and metal content.

There are no markings or designs on the reverse of the Atlantis Skull and Crossbones Hand-Poured Silver Square. Each of these products is hand-poured by the refiners at the Atlantis Mint and the engravings on the obverse are stamped into the square by hand. This means that each square is individually unique as no two products have the stamped markings in the exact same position.

A family-owned and operated enterprise, the Atlantis Mint is a private minting operation in the United States. Its primary focus is on the production of silver products, with all of its products hand-poured and hand-stamped. The new 1 oz Atlantis Skull and Crossbones Silver Square joins the 1 oz silver round and 2 oz silver round of the same design as new options from the mint.
