AUTOGRAPHED PERSONAL LETTER FROM HILDA CONKLING TO MARY, 1966

EXTREMELY RARE!!

 - $3K APPRAISAL VALUE!

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Extremely rare, one of a kind, 1966 hand-written and signed letter from Hilda Conkling, an American poet

Hilda composed most of her poetry as a young child, between the ages of four and fourteen years old. She never wrote them down herself; instead, they came out in conversation with her mother, who would write down Hilda's words either in the moment, or from memory later. If the latter, she would read the lines back to Hilda, who would then correct any deviation from her original words. As Hilda grew up, her mother stopped recording the poems, and Hilda is not known to have written any herself as an adult.

This letter was written in 1966, when Hilda was 56. It is super rare to have her writings after she became an adult so this piece is extremly valuable to be collected.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Mary

Enclosed are some scraps, or whatever, maybe of no value. Although since Hochings died only this last summer. This may have interest in his field of philosophy. He was quite well-known in any case. If none are, I will understand, and you will be kind enough to throw them away if you wish. I keep ambling through the surrounding boxes and really this is the bud of them. That have any interest, have Bianchi’s might interest E. Dickinson collection since she was his aunt. Another weird person in her own right.

I’ve had no luck in finding anything here. You know how Englanders keep their secrets! I have found many letters to Miss Baber (who rebuilt this whole house) from hers in Canada. Mostly regarding her search for information regarding what happened to the 111 captives taken there from her in the attack of 1704. Most in reach. The Queen Victoria stamps might have the only value, but I don’t know. No one here seems to care about them, so I’ll put them in the library here. I seem free to do what I like with them and can send you a few if there were any interest. All date one around 1890 – 1895.

Have had a good season here so far and the color has been wonderful!

Best wishes to you both.

Hilda.
