This photograph shows the nine Justices of the Supreme Court as well as their original signatures from 1963. Known as “The Warren Court” (1953-1969), this was the period in history during which Earl Warren served as Chief Justice. It lasted during the presidencies of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson. It began when Earl Warren received a recess appointment for Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from President Dwight D. Eisenhower on October 2, 1953.
These Justices ruled on Gideon v. Wainwright (1963). This was a landmark case in the United States Supreme Court history. In it, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that states are required under the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to provide an attorney to defendants in criminal cases who are unable to afford their own attorneys. The case extended the right to counsel, which had been found under the Fifth and Sixth Amendments to impose requirements on the federal government, by imposing those requirements upon the states as well.

1. Byron Raymond White is remembered primarily for his distinct pragmatic approach to law and secondarily for his successful early career as a professional football player in the NFL, where he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Lions. White was first appointed as U.S. Deputy Attorney General by John F. Kennedy in 1961 and later took the seat as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on April 16, 1962.
2. William Joseph Brennan Jr., born in Newark to a family of Irish immigrants in 1906, was one of the longest-serving and most influential justices in the history of the Court. Brennan attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Commerce and Finance, and served as a Major in the Army during World War II, eventually earning the rank of Colonel. Brennan was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1956 as a recess appointment and confirmed by the Senate in 1957.
3. Potter Stewart was an influential swing vote as a centrist pragmatic member of the Court, who helped to tip the scales on many important decisions over his 22 years on the bench. Stewart attended Yale Law School and served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. Stewart’s appointment to the Supreme Court was confirmed by the Senate in 1959.
4. Arthur Joseph Goldberg was born in Chicago to Jewish parents who emigrated from the former Russian Empire. After studying law at Northwestern University and successful practice as a lawyer, Goldberg served in the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA, during World War II. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1962.
5. Tom Campbell Clark was known as a balanced legal mind dedicated to the work of judging. Clark served as an infantryman in the United States National Guard in 1918 during World War I. Clark initially worked in the war risk litigation section, and later the antitrust division; being appointed as head of the department’s western coast antitrust office in 1940. He was appointed and confirmed to the Supreme Court in 1949.
6. Hugo LaFayette Black came from a humble beginning at a farm in Alabama and went on the be sworn in as an Alabama Senator in 1927. Black was quite active in committees and on the floor, and he fought for legislation to ensure fair labor and minimum wage. He was sworn in as an Associate Justice on August 18, 1937.
7. Earl Warren transformed the judicial system during a tumultuous time for American politics. He attended University of California at Berkeley for his undergraduate studies. Warren was appointed District Attorney of Alameda County on January 12, 1925. Serving as District Attorney for 13 years, Warren put an end to the scandalous affairs of corrupt bail bond brokers. Warren was sworn in by President Eisenhower as the 14th Chief Justice on October 4, 1953.
8. William Orville Douglas set the record for longest continuous service on the Supreme Court. In 1922, he arrived in New York City to attend Columbia Law School with only six cents in his pocket. Douglas was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Roosevelt and confirmed on April 4, 1939.
9. John Marshall Harlan was a conservative icon of the U.S. Supreme Court who practiced a unique form of jurisprudence combining judicial restraint and activism. Harlan attended Princeton University as well as the University of Oxford. President Eisenhower nominated Harlan to take a seat at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in January 1954 and was confirmed by the Senate the following February.
