A one-of-a-kind rare folio-sized Holy Bible focusing on Trinity Church in New York City. This volume is a circa 1880's to 1890's Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments by the Rev. Alexander Fletcher, D.D. It is published by George Virtue, London, and New York. This is a massive and complete Family Bible Set having Illustrated and numerous engravings. It is titled the Devotional Family Bible with Practical and Experimental Reflections on each Verse. It was published in two volumes: the first containing Genesis thru Job, and the second Psalms thru Revelations.. While this is not the publication date it does put it in the Victorian era and at the 200th anniversary of Trinity Church.
The leather cover is a greenish brown with extensive Victorian gold filigree inlay on both front and back covers. The spine has gold etched boxes along its entire length with Holy Bible printed on the upper portion. Gold gilt leaf edging is present on the page edges as shown above and has a delicate aged luster to it. This volume has pictures of Trinity Church in New York City shown on the front, with details in the pictures of horse drawn carriages on Cobblestone streets in front of the Church.
Trinity Church, Wall Street is an Episcopal parish that has been a part of New York City since 1697. For over 300 years it has been deeply rooted in the nations history as it was established during the British occupation of New York. It was recognized by royal charter, and was the first Anglican Church in Manhattan. The current building is the third on the site and was consecrated in 1846.
This is a rare and unique example of a Victorian Bible and a massive compilation in a two set volume. This volume weights around 12 1/2 pounds. It measures approximately 15" x 12" x 5". Both title pages are present. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. It would make an excellent display piece as it could be opened to any of the Title Pages or left closed to show the magnificent leather and the gold leaf stamped pattern design on the covers.
