ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Presenting a unique artifact of cultural significance, this captivating piece is a handwritten letter penned by Ruth Donnelly (May 17, 1896 – November 17, 1982), a renowned American film and stage actress celebrated for her vivacious performances and comedic brilliance. Addressed to Mervyn Edward Griffin Jr., an esteemed television host and influential figure in the entertainment industry, the letter bears the date of May 17th, 1979, providing a poignant glimpse into Donnelly's final years.

Within the letter, Donnelly articulates her desire for Griffin's assistance in bringing her creative vision to fruition. Specifically, she seeks collaboration in setting her original lyrics to music, enclosed with the correspondence. Titled "There's Only Now, My Darling," these lyrics serve as a testament to Donnelly's artistic versatility and enduring legacy.

Drawing inspiration from the classic composition "Silver Threads Among the Gold," initially copyrighted in 1873 and a beloved melody in American musical history, Donnelly's adaptation showcases her talent for blending tradition with innovation. Despite the absence of public disclosure regarding any potential recordings of her song, its existence adds an air of intrigue to this artifact, inviting speculation and appreciation from enthusiasts and historians alike.

This artifact holds undeniable appeal for collectors of entertainment memorabilia and scholars of cinematic history. Not only does it offer insight into the creative process of two iconic figures, but it also underscores the interconnectedness of artistic expression across generations. As a tangible link to the golden age of Hollywood and the timeless allure of the performing arts, this letter serves as a testament to the enduring power of creativity and collaboration.

My dear Merv-

I was 80 on the calendar May 17, but still feel seventeen. Your wonderful Irving Berlin Program was sparkling and it brought back many fond memories. I attend a party Irving’s home in the twenties with Jeanne Eagles, also Clifton + Maybelle Webb. Irving was composing “all alone” at the time and he played it for us. Those were the days! I was inspired to write the enclosed lyrics while _ was playing. I feel the time has come to step this up off about old-age, so here is a modern version of “Silver Threads Among The Gold”. My lovely composer called it a day several years ago when the Rock and Roll took on the record industries so I have no one I can contact to write the music for these lyrics. If you know any composer whom you think would like to veto take a long-shot and share this song with me I would welcome your advice. I would also be most grateful in your expert opinion of these lyrics. It would be mighty helpful to me. Needless to say you are a wonder to behold and like meditation helps to cool the agitation of the sympathetic system in which many of us has to day.

Blessings on thee

There’s Only Now My Darling

There’s only now, my darling

You never shall grow old

There are no years, my darling

No age that can unfold

You’re always young my darling

The best is yet to be

For there is only one life

That life is infinity

Let not your heart be weary

Let go of every fear

There’s nothing oh, my darling

That’s worth a single tear

So when the silver scatters

Among the strands of gold

Forget about your birthdays

Left that you’ve been told

There’s only now my darling

You never shall grow old
