Original Handwritten Signed Ruth Donnelly Poem Hollywood 1952 - $10K APR w/CoA
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Presenting an extraordinary and scarce handwritten poem penned by Ruth Donnelly (May 17, 1896 – November 17, 1982), a luminary of American film and stage renowned for her exuberant portrayals and comedic finesse. Crafted amidst the glitz and glamour of Hollywood in 1952, during the twilight of her illustrious career which spanned three decades until 1957, this poignant composition bears witness to Donnelly's introspection and artistic prowess.
Titled "I Should Have Left with My Era, Vera," the poem encapsulates Donnelly's candid reflections on the passage of time and the inexorable march of aging. Through evocative language and keen introspection, she eloquently articulates the bittersweet sentiments of a bygone era, wherein she grapples with feelings of displacement and nostalgia for a time when youth and vitality reigned supreme. The only other time this poem has been mentioned was in a The New York Times article from July 9, 1982, Section C, Page 17 of the National edition with the headline: NIGHT OF RKO MEMORIES, where it is stated “Ruth Donnelly (''Bells of St. Mary's'') read a poem of her own composition, entitled ''I Should Have Left With My Era, Vera.''
This artifact stands as a testament to Donnelly's enduring impact on the entertainment landscape, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a Hollywood luminary. For collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, entertainment historians, and devoted fans alike, this handwritten poem represents a treasured memento of a bygone era—an intimate portrayal of one woman's journey through the shifting sands of time.
As a relic imbued with both historical significance and emotional resonance, "I Should Have Left with My Era, Vera" serves as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of fame and the enduring legacy of those who once graced the silver screen.

Verse I Should Have Left With My Era, Vera 1952.
I should have left with my era, Vera
I really no longer belong
The world is so filled with such muck and goo
Everything you buy stuck together with glue
That cheap costume jewelry those rhinestones
What litter
It’s all just a tinseled mess
Of just glitter
You can’t wear your real pearls
Or your large diamond ring.
Less you meet with a mugger
On leave from sing sing
Over that rock and roll music
If music it be.
Well it sounds more like an
Indians War-Whoop to me.
Our tunes were so catchy
And Jazz had a swing hit
Today it’s just noise
And the crooners that sing?
(Ha Ha Ha Ha - Ha)
The _ has gotten the hook
In my day and age
It took wise and talent to then
Be the rage
And those mad, naked _ that streak through
The air
They’ll all get a hernia unless
They take care
Respect and good manners they
Taught us and charm
To help me _ and never
Do harm
Oh I hope that the young ones will
Keep on the team?
Things are never as bad they’ll
Find as they seem
We all have to struggle to learn
What is right
But once that you’ve found it you’ve
Won the good fight
I better shut up on ___
Like a teacher
Or one of those hags/bags who thinks
She a preacher
So now I’ll sign off and
Turn back the pages
Dream once again of that
_ of all ages
During _ of ages left me
I’ll hear the faint echo of
Loves old sweet song
And see those dear faces
That long since has gone
Oh I’ve got to stop yakking
About the past
For there’s only right now and
No evil can last
And there’s no era, Vera
For me to belong
In life is eternal just
Loves old sweet song
